Knowing where to find a policy and how to start a claim can reduce confusion during a difficult time.

Find the right contact

Look for the policy document, premium statements, or employer benefit records. Contact the insurer through its official website or a verified phone number. For workplace coverage, ask the employer which insurer handles the benefit.

Ask for the document list

The insurer will usually require a claim form and proof of death. Requirements vary with the policy, beneficiary arrangement, and circumstances. Ask how to submit documents securely and keep copies of what you send.

Do not assume a payment deadline

Coverage eligibility, contestability provisions, and missing records can affect timing. Ask for a case reference and an explanation of outstanding requirements. A promise that all claims pay within a fixed number of days is not a reliable household cash-flow plan.

Review payment choices

A lump sum and installments have different cash-flow consequences. Ask whether interest is included. Death benefits are generally excluded from federal gross income, but interest and some arrangements have different treatment. Confirm your situation with a qualified tax professional before making major decisions.
