Premiums buy protection under a contract. Distinguishing the death benefit from cash value helps families compare policies.

Understand term coverage

Term coverage lasts a stated period and can pay a benefit for a covered death during that period. Ordinary term coverage does not build a withdrawable savings balance. Outliving the term does not normally produce a payment.

Read cash-value features

Some permanent policies build cash value. Amounts, charges, guarantees, and access rules depend on the contract. Early surrender can return much less than premiums paid. Projections differ from guarantees.

Ask what borrowing changes

Policy loans can accrue interest and affect available value and the eventual benefit. A lapse or surrender with a loan outstanding can have tax consequences. This is not automatically free or riskless access to money.

Compare with your need

Identify who depends on you, for how long, and what premium is sustainable. Keep accessible emergency savings separately instead of assuming a life policy meets every short-term cash need.
