Life coverage and disability income coverage protect against different events. Understanding the distinction avoids expecting a benefit a policy does not provide.
Identify the trigger
The core life benefit is payable after the insured person dies, subject to the policy. Disability income coverage may replace part of earnings during a qualifying illness or injury while the person is alive. Neither simply pays because the budget is tight.

Read optional features separately
An accelerated death-benefit rider may provide access to part of a life benefit under specified conditions. It is not comprehensive disability income protection. Using it may reduce what remains for beneficiaries.
Ask about the income gap
For disability coverage, ask about the definition of disability, waiting period, duration, monthly cap, and offsets for other benefits. Compare potential benefits with essential expenses and continuing income.
Coordinate the pieces
Health coverage addresses covered medical expenses; emergency savings help with immediate costs. Review the documents together. Do not cancel one form of protection assuming another automatically replaces it.
